NEW FIXED EXPOSITION
Cultural-historical picture of Kroměříž since its origination till the Early Modern Age.
It is placed in the historical basement under the building of house number 38 (seigniorial capitulary house), in the seat of the museum, at Big Square in Kroměříž.
This project has been supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Financial Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and by the Zlín Region through the Programme for preservation, renovation, and disclosure of Zlín Region material cultural heritage.
Up to the present, the town of Kroměříž has missed a complex picture of its past assessment. Where else it is suitable to present a historical picture of the town together with dateless values created by previous generations than in the environment of the capitulary house basement, in the space with a “historical memory” and a unique atmosphere given by the magic of original stonework masonry mass. The effort of creators of the exposition called “The history hidden under the paving stones of the town” is to create an impressive picture of the town history in a form of archaeological and historical sources combination and with the usage of modern presentation forms. It is the picture that loosely ties up to archaeological part of the museum exposition “Nature and Man” on the second floor of the museum building, dealing with primeval settlement and regional history from its beginning to the early Middle Ages.
This attractive area of historical basement offers the visitors exposition on the town life in the past using rich archaeological and historical museum collection funds that approach historical events and everyday life of its inhabitants from the Early Middle Ages till the Early Modern Age (till the half of 17th century). The visitors can see here, i.e. findings from exposed waste traps and wells, medieval ceramics, glass, proofs of small utility arts, proofs of menus and hygiene, findings of pottery kilns and workshops, but also instruments of torture and proves of torture, medieval armour and so on).
The exposition is divided into thematic units (The footsteps lead to primeval times, From the market settlement to town, Crafts in the suburbs, From the middle class kitchen, The town in the fortifications, Treasures hidden under the paving stones of the town, House and town streets in the past). The exposition especially places emphasis on the three-dimensional exhibits testimony placed in the showcases with minimum textual information. The visitor mostly obtains textual, pictorial and other additional information in the form of demo audiovisual programs he can choose himself. For example, in a form of touch sensors and square display you can walk through the town streets in a town scaled model rendering its form of the half of 19th century. You will learn of everything concerning construction development, ancient monuments and town cultural history with the help of this “virtual” walk through the town. Moreover, the basic scheme of exposition is animated with model reconstructions. Except for the mentioned above town model, there is a medieval pottery kiln with potter’s workshop, burgher house scullery, medieval waste trap and a real, more than three hundred years old wooden water piping, discovered under the paving stones of one Kroměříž streets. Among the “treasures” found under the town paving stones, the visitor can also see proofs of medieval literacy and small utility arts, medieval, renaissance and baroque decoration tile stove, but also real mint and jewellery treasures and other valuables hidden by the town citizens in the times of danger.
