Archaeological collection

The archaeological sub-collection is the largest collection in the Kroměříž District Museum, containing archaeological artefacts dating back to the Middle Palaeolithic to Modern Era. In terms of geography, the items come from around the Kroměříž municipality, the region (district) of Kroměříž and from outside it, as well as from abroad (Slovakia, Austria, Egypt, Norway, etc.). The core of the collection comes from a private collection of Jindřich Slovák from the late 19th century and early 20th century, collections of J. Spáčil, S. Hlobil, and other researchers. This core is further developed with materials acquired by donations, non-destructive surveying of the localities, smaller archaeological projects, and rescue excavations. There are whole artefacts or fragments of ceramics, stone, metal, glass and glass matter, bone and antler, and of organic materials. The collection contains also anthropological, archaeozoological, paleobotanical, and malacozoological materials. A larger unit under the sub-collection is represented by finds from the unique prehistoric locality Hradisko u Kroměříže and from the medieval castle Cimburk near Koryčany.
