Reason and method of constitution
Founded in 1933, the museum has been a contributory organisation of the Zlín Region since 2003. With its professional focus, it goes beyond the boundaries of the region. The core of the museum’s work is the care of its collections. Individual specialist departments manage and present extensive collections, including the work of Max Švabinský, important Czech painter and graphic artist and native of Kroměříž. The museum also has a department for working with children and young people, which creates thematic programmes and prepares educational programmes for schools and the public for exhibitions and expositions. The museum focuses on exhibition, lecture and publication activities, provides expert advice to researchers and students, especially secondary and higher education, and cooperates with other memory institutions. A specialist library with a study room is open to the public. Kroměříž District Museum also manages the windmill in Velké Těšany, national cultural monument, and an open-air complex in Rymice, comprising a collection of vernacular buildings of the Haná region, a renaissance stronghold with a historical farmyard, and another windmill.
